What the heck is a glaze? Well its a transparent layer of paint and to glaze a painting, you must paint over each layer of paint and let it dry then paint another layer let it dry , do this several times , and each glaze thus enhances the paint beneath the glaze and therefore makeing your painting stand out . Does it take time and patience , Yes but so did making your oil painting, so time should be on your side . If your looking for instant results glazing is not for you , because of the time consuming efforts to layer each glaze then drying, its a lengthy process, but what an outcome .
What glazing will do for an oil painting is enhance your original paint and the fullness and rich colors will really brighten up your work, I have used this on many of my oil paintings and have sen a more real life look to the art I do.
There are several colors of transparent pigments, so chose what is right for you, as with the oils themselves some of the transparents willl not mix well and therefore can produce a dull fragmented look to your original. The time you take in glazing and then the dry off periosd should make all the difference in the art work you have created. Sometimes you just have to test the different cors of transparency to se what will work with you and your project, its all a I like it or not attitude , because it your work anyway. Make mistakes on oil paintings, and enjoy what you created , even if its not what you really had in mind, I know from experience that sometimes I may not like the glaze look at all, and others find it quite beautiful.
I am a photogrpaher also , so I mix my colors in the lab if I want and take photos of my paintings and mix with other colors, Now you look at me with why , you do that, because I want to , and I did not ge the glaze I wanted or the painting just loooks better as a photograph , here is one I did, and I just like colors period, they seem to match my decor.
When You glaze it should not bubble up on you, they should be smooth lenthy strokes from your brush, smooth not lumpy and each layer upon layer should glide just as smoothly for that perfect look you are seeking in a glazing effort.
